Biography

James Alleman is the Joel and Judy Cerwick Professor of Environmental Engineering with Iowa State University's Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering department located in Ames, Iowa USA. His three-decade professional career sequentially includes prior appointments with the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps with the Pacific/Asian theater (3 years; 1972-1975), the University of Maryland (4 years; 1978-1982), and Purdue University (23 years; 1978-2005), plus a sabbatical affiliation with the University of Leeds (1990 and a Fulbright Scholar appointment at the Technical University of Crete (2005). Most recently, Dr. Alleman also served a one-year assignment as a Jefferson Science Fellow for the US Department of State and USAID in Washington, DC, with project responsibilities for water (Armenia), wastewater (Moldova), and radiation challenges (Chernobyl, Ukraine) within the Eurasia region. Dr.  Alleman has advised 15 PhD and 75 MS recipients whose research outcomes were then published in ~70 refereed journal papers and 30-plus conference proceedings, and he co‐authored a related textbook entitled, "Environmental Biology for Engineers and Scientists.”  He is a registered professional engineer in the State of Indiana. Extending beyond his Fulbright Scholar and State Department Fellow awards, Dr. Alleman has received three university-level teaching awards plus one research award.

Research Interest

Dr. Alleman’s research interests cover the development, application, and assessment of sustainable, environmental engineering technologies for water, wastewater, and residuals management systems. His prior and current research activities address both municipal and industrial applications, relative to conventional pollutants and nutrient removal, as well as dealing with advanced challenges in relation to recalcitrant organics, nano-scale mercury removal, optimization of biological consortia, and energy-minimization strategies using appropriate sensor use and integrated control technologies.  Dr. Alleman was a co-recipient of an American Consulting Engineers Council award connected with his design and installation of the computer-based control system used at one of the first automated wastewater treatment facilities built in the United States.
