Biography

Baburao Koneru, MD, MPH is currently a Professor and Chief of the Division of Liver Transplant and HBP surgery, and Vice Chair of Clinical Research at the Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School. He obtained his undergraduate medical education in Mysore and postgraduate studies in surgery at The Jawaharlal Institute in Pondicherry in India before coming to the U.S. In the U.S. after a surgery residency at The Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C in 1985, he completed a transplantation surgery fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh with Dr. Thomas E. Starzl.

After serving as a faculty member at University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Koneru joined the Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School in 1989 as the director of the transplant program. He has served as councilor of Region 2 and member of the Board of Directors and Membership and Professional Standards Committee in the UNOS, member of communications and organ procurement committees of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons. He is currently a member of the editorial board of Liver Transplantation.

Research Interest

Dr. Koneru’s research interests include preconditioning of brain death donor organs, ischemia reperfusion injury in fatty livers, clinical trials of immunosuppression in liver recipients, complications after liver transplantation and liver transplantation for primary liver malignancies.

Major Research Interests:

  1. Preconditioning in Organ Transplantation: I have focused most of my research efforts in the last 10 years on ischemic and remote ischemic preconditioning in organ donors. Although considerable research has been performed in the laboratory on the mechanisms and efficacy of ischemic preconditioning, very little work has been done in its clinical application. We have published results of two clinical trials on liver IPC in addition to several other publications related to ischemic preconditioning. In the last 3 years we have begun to investigate remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) using hind limb ischemia. After conducting a pilot study of RIPC, we have begun a multicenter, HRSA-funded 3 year clinical trial to investigate efficacy of RIPC in neurological death donors.
  2. Immunosuppression in Liver Transplantation: Renal insufficiency is a major problem in long term care of liver recipients. My focus has been in developing renal sparing immunosuppressive regimens in liver recipients. Have participated in several national and international multi-center studies investigating IL-2 antibody, combination of mycophenolate and sirolimus, sirolimus alone and most recently everolimus.
  3. Ischemia / Reperfusion Injury in Fatty Livers: Fatty liver is a common problem in liver transplant donors. Our laboratory described an animal model of hepatic warm ischemia and reperfusion injury in obese Zucker rat. Subsequently we investigated some of the pathophysiological mechanisms of the increased reperfusion injury in animals with fatty liver. This work generated several publications. At present we are investigating the interaction between etiology of recipient’s liver failure and the post-transplant reperfusion injury and the financial implications of post-transplant reperfusion injury.
  4. Hepatocellular carcinoma and liver transplantation: In the recent years there is an increase in hepatocellular cancer and liver transplantation presents as a very effective treatment for early stage cancers in the presence of cirrhosis. One limitation of application of such therapy to more advanced tumors is our inability to detect micrometastases. This is an area of clinical research interest that is actively pursued with prospective studies of tumor cell detection in bone marrow and circulating tumor cell detection. Also, association of immunohistochemical characteristics and their association with tumor recurrence with tissue microarray methodology.
