Biography

Dr. Mari Palta is a biostatistician and epidemiologist with extensive experience in the design and analysis of cohort studies, clinical trials, surveys and clinical outcome studies. She have been involved in research on the health consequences of sleep disordered breathing and other aspects of sleep since 1988 as one of the co-founders of the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort study.

In her long involvement as the senior biostatistician with the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort Study and numerous spin-off studies, she have collaborated on most aspects of sleep, risk factors for sleep problems and outcomes associated with sleep problems. She has also participated in understanding the measurement properties of both risk factors and outcomes. The targets of key epidemiologic investigations included weight gain and menopause as a risk factors for sleep disordered breathing, hypertension as an outcome, effect of CPAP on blood pressure, accidents as an outcome, cognitive function as an outcome, and health related quality of life as an outcome. Throughout she served as the point person for resolving statistical modeling issues and for interpreting statistical results.

Dr. Mari Palta other experiences include large long term follow-up studies of population based cohorts with type 1 diabetes and very low birth weight. In addition she collaborated on a national survey comparing indexes of health related quality of life. In numerous other studies she has addressed a very wide range of statistical needs.

Motivated by the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort and other cohort studies, she developed approaches for the analysis of observational longitudinal studies with model misspecification such as measurement error, confounding and missing observations. This research has led to insight about the structure of longitudinal estimators and has produced easily applied analytic techniques to correct for misspecification.

Research Interests

  • Associations of sleep parameters with various outcomes.
  • Comparison of methods to disentangle cause and effect.
  • Assessing the usefulness of different missing data models for longitudinal data with extensive follow-up.
