Education

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) 1994
Master of Pharmacy (M. Pharm) 1989

Biography

He is a lecture and research into various aspects of pharmaceutical education and particularly raw materials utilization and sustainability as well as health sector reforms and public health. Currently he has over a 200 hundred articles in both national and international journals. Since the past 6 years he has been managing a project aimed at improving post-basic and higher education system in Nigeria through the World Bank IDA system.

He supervises both undergraduate and postgraduate students in the above areas of pharmacy practice. He has graduated ten doctoral students and twenty other students at the master’s degree level. Many are currently under my tutelage. Three of my students are already full professors of Pharmacy.

He has both local and international experience in the pharmaceutical sector especially in education and research as he have visited overseas laboratory twice as an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow in Germany and a Matsumae Fellow in Japan . He have won several other fellowships some of which he have not been able to utilize, such as the Third World Academy of Sciences South-South Fellowship to Cameroon (1996), and the Third World Associate Fellowship to Argentina (2000). In the area of international grants, he has won a research grant from the Royal Society of Chemistry of Great Britain (2002); a grant from the Third World Academy of Sciences (2004) and another grant from the International Foundation for Science (2004). He was also a recipient of the Royal Society of Great Britain short term research fellowship to the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom.

He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science, a Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, an Honorary Fellow of the Science Teachers’ Association of Nigeria, a Member of the Institute of Public Analysts of Nigeria and the President of the Nanomedicine Society of Nigeria. I have won the Nigerian Prize for Science and the May and Baker Prize for Excellence in the Practice of Pharmacy.

He has occupied several administrative positions in my university such as headship of my department (1995-1998; 2002-2004). He belongs to several university committees such as research grant, consultancy, postgraduate, finance, publications/colloquia committees, etc. He is a member of the University of Nigeria Strategic Planning Committee and carry out SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) Analysis for my Faculty. He just completed a job as the National Coordinator of a World Bank-Assisted Science and Technology Education Post-Basic Project (STEP-B) in Nigeria, which ended June 30th, 2013. He spent over 6 years running the project worth $180m and it was adjudged successful at the end of implementation. He started from day one of the Project to develop the blueprint for the component dealing with emergence of centres of excellence of the Project. He supervised the monitoring and evaluation aspect of the stage result monitoring framework development to baseline data collection to the full collection of the data of the outcome indicators. He also supervised various procurement activities including international and national competitive bidding activities worth millions of dollars. He also supervised the funds management under the Project. The total number of international competitive bidding carried out under the project was 61. He also supervised the Environmental Management and Safeguard Plans as well as the Environmental Audit.

Under this project 11 centres in the teaching and learning of Science and Technology emerged as Centres of Excellence. The National Strategy for these Centres of Excellence based on national needs was developed through my efforts with support from the Federal Ministry of Education and the World Bank. The Project also supports other 195 institutions carrying out 220 other sub-projects. He also recently developed other national strategy documents on reversing the fallen standards in education through post-doctoral arrangement and increasing access to university education through public partnership arrangements.  The following centres of Excellence are focusing completely on medical and pharmaceutical researches. 1. Centre for Zoonotic and Infectious Diseases. This centre is located at the University of Calabar in South East Nigeria. This centre is also researching into various forms of nosochomial infections. 2. Centre for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering. This centre is located at the Federal University of Technology in Minna, in the Middle Belt States of Nigeria. The Centre is focusing on the development of vaccine for tropical diseases. 3. Environmental Protection and Preservation. In this regards emphasis ie being laid on bar-coding of medicinal plants for drug use.   4. Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technology. This includes advanced materials for nanotechnolgy. 5. Food Security Studies which is looking at some common Nigerian food crops for enhanced production through genetic modifications and other biotechnology practices. 6. Chemical Research and Technology into the Production of Fertilizers for our farmers. 7. Renewable Energy. This study is focusing on wind and solar forms of energy. 8. Centre for Technical Vocational Education and Training. This centre is focused on the production of technical teachers for our technical education system. 9. Software Engineering. This centre will focus its own study on the production of computer software for the nation. 10. Centre fort Solid Minerals Research and Development. Nigeria is rich in solid minerals. This will help to lessen focus on the oil sector. 11. Multimedia Technology and Cinematography. This centre is to research into and further develop the Nigerian film industry.

In terms of language ability, I am an Idoma (a Nigerian tribe) by tribe. I speak English (fluently), French (moderately), German (moderately), Japanese (a little), Hausa (a little), Yoruba (a little) and Ibo (a little). He can, therefore, fit well into any social and cultural environment with ease.
