Profile
Hosam Elbaz is a pharmacist and a pharmacologist. He graduated from Misr International University, college of pharmacy in June 2005. He then received his PhD from West Virginia University School of Pharmacy in December 2011, and then he finished a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at Wayne State University School of Medicine on March 2014. Dr. Elbaz is interested in experimental cancer therapeutics, particularly those derived from nutritional origins. He recently published a research article titled “Epicatechin Stimulates Mitochondrial Activity and Selectively Sensitizes Cancer Cells to Radiation” in which he showed that epicatechin, a natural ingredient of coffee and dark chocolate, can increase the sensitivity of cancer cells to conventional radiotherapy while non-cancerous tissues remain unharmed. He showed that increasing mitochondrial respiration in cancer cells renders them sensitive to cell death by radiation.
