Dr. Janet Hayes Southerland ’82 (AB, ’84 BSDH, ’89 DDS, ’94 MPH, ’05 PhD), Brentwood, Tenn. Professor and former dean, Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry.
GAA Board of Directors: Out of state district director (2012-15).
At UNC: Opeyo dancer; peer counselor; member, Sweet Carolines; UNC System Board of Governors’ Scholar; member, Delta Sigma Theta sorority.
Formerly: President, Old North State Dental Society; member, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation national advisory committee; committee chair, Black Alumni Reunion; member, Sonya Haynes Stone Black Cultural Center advisory board; founding member, Light On The Hill Scholarship committee; member, Governor’s Diabetes advisory committee.

Married to Johnnie S. Southerland ’81 (AB, ’83 MRP). Four children.

 

Research Interest

  1. The relationship between diabetes and periodontal disease represents my major research interests.
    • Effect of LPS and Advanced Glycation Endproducts on monocyte over-expression of inflammatory mediator
    • Impact of this interaction on development of severe periodontal disease in individuals with diabetes.
  2. The prevention and early detection of oral and oropharyngeal cancer.
  3. Impact of oral disease on HIV overall health outcomes.
