Biography

I have been on the faculty of the Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine of Duke University Medical Center since 1973. I am the past director of Duke's occupational and environmental medicine education I received my MD degree from Harvard University and my MSPH degree (in industrial hygiene) from the University of North Carolina=s School of Public Health. I have completed graduate training programs (in medicine and health care research) at Duke University Medical Center and at Indiana University Medical Center.  I am Board Certified in Preventive Medicine (Occupational Medicine) and in Internal Medicine. My clinical practice has focused on industrial and environmental toxicology, particularly the effects heavy metal exposures, toxic gases, pesticides and solvents on the respiratory, neurological and renal systems.  My research interests include the development of assays for environmental and industrial exposures to mercury; clinical evaluation of mercury intoxication; and the development of exposure parameters for respirable quartz and titanium dioxide. I have directed the Division’s Toxicology Program and am course director for a course (ENVR 423) on industrial and environmental toxicology. I offer residents and other students opportunities for evaluating adverse health effects from environmental exposures.

Research Interest

Dr. Stopford's research interests include the development of assays for environmental and industrial exposures to mercury; clinical treatment of mercury intoxication; and the development of exposure parameters for respirable quartz and other respirable aerosols and vapors.
