Biography

Pascal Gerbaux is Professor of Organic Chemistry and Mass Spectrometry at the University of Mons in Belgium. He is also the head of the Organic Synthesis and Mass Spectrometry Laboratory that is today constituted by around 15 people. He is also in charge of the Mass Spectrometry Center at the UMons that is equipped with eight mass spectrometers, including the unique Waters AutoSpec 6F and a brand new Waters Synapt G2-Si mass spectrometer. He has developed a strong expertise in the field of organic mass spectrometry and is acknowledged for his involvement in the so-called Gas Phase Ion Chemistry studies. His domain of research nowadays concerns the development of mass spectrometry methods for the structural characterization of supramolecular assemblies, macromolecules and natural products.

  1. Fundamental studies of the physicochemical phenomena related to modern methods of mass spectrometry

B. Responsibilities related to research:

  1. Head (scientific, administrative, educational and financial) of the Mass Spectrometry facilities in UMons
  2. Founding member of the Interdisciplinary Center for Mass Spectrometry of UMons (CISMa)
  3. Manager of a strong technologic platform of 8 complementary mass spectrometers. Supervision of Master (20 from 2005) and PhD (8 from 2007) theses in the field of mass spectrometry
  4. Financial support awarded in 2015 (500.000 euros) for the acquisition of a new ion mobility mass spectrometer
  5. Responsible for the interuniversity service activity for organic and macromolecular chemistry (> 800 samples / year)
  6. Member of the Belgian Society for Mass Spectrometry committee (BSMS).
  7. Organization of the annual conference of the BSMS in 2011
  8. Supervision of many trainees from Europe, America, Asia and Africa.
