Biography

Brenda Louw is a Professor in Speech-Language Pathology, Director of the Speech-Language pathology Masters Program and Chair of the Department of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology at ETSU. Her research interests include cleft lip and palate, cultural competence and pediatric HIV/AIDS. She has participated in The Smile Train programs in various African countries and was the Project Director of the DoE FIPSE grant 2010-2016. She was awarded the Carnegie Foundation African Diaspora award in 2015 and 2016 She is the PI on the PI of The Tennessee Department of Education grant Institute in Speech-Language Pathology Tennessee Teachers Cohort, awarded from 2013-2015, and again from 2015-2020. Dr. Louw is a member of the Executive Committee of the 13th International Congress of Cleft Lip and Palate and Related Craniofacial Anomalies to be held February 8-11, 2017 in India. She is a member of ASHA SIG 5 and on the Editorial Board of SIG 5. She is the 2017 ASHA Convention Topic Co-Chair of Global Issues and Practices and has served as Chair since 2014 .She is a Subject Matter Expert and collaborated with a team to develop ASHA‘s Practice Portal pages for Cleft Lip and Palate. She is a faculty member of the Vanderbilt Consortium Leadership in Education in neurodevelopment Disabilities (LEND). She has over 80 peer reviewed publications and has presented at conferences on six continents.
