Research Interest

My current research interest focuses in understanding the metabolic impact that nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and specifically its more severe form nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), may have in patients with obesity and/or type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). As obesity and T2DM have acquired epidemic proportions, NAFLD has become much more frequent in the general population, resulting in a further increase in cardiovascular disease, the main cause of morbidity and mortality in NAFLD. Specifically, I am interested in understanding the individual and combined roles that adipose tissue, skeletal muscle and the liver play in the development and progression of NAFLD and NASH.
