Biography

Dr. Ozbay is a Professor in the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources in Delaware State University. She is appointed primarily for research and her research interests are in the area of habitat restoration and water quality issues, specifically water quality driven toxicity in harmful algae, shellfish-algae dynamics, nutrient and water quality management, heavy metal contaminants, aquatic ecology, aquatic species diversity and dynamics, and bacterial monitoring. Her extension work concentrates on drinking water quality of wells in rural areas and coastal water quality issues regarding seafood safety and other water uses.  She received her Ph.D. in Fisheries and Allied Aquacultures at Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama in 2002. She conducted research leading to the development of aquaculture effluent water quality standards for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as her Ph.D. project. She received her Master of Sciences in Marine Bio-resources at the University of Maine, Orono, Maine in 1996. Her Bachelor of Sciences Degree was in the Fisheries and Aquaculture Engineering in Turkey in 1991. Dr. Ozbay has advised over 15 graduate and 75 undergraduate students and has served on 20 additional graduate students committees.

She has received several outstanding researcher awards at the national, regional and institutional levels (i.e. The Prestigious Coastal America Partnership Award in 2009, 2009 Distinguished Scientist Award, 2009 Faculty Excellence Award in Research & Creative Activity, 2010 Faculty Excellence Award in Student Advising, 2011 Morrison-Evans Outstanding Scientist Award, 2012 Faculty Excellence Award in Services & Community Outreach). She serves as an Editorial Board Member for the Journal of Earth Science & Climatic Change; Journal of Biotech Research; Journal of Environmental Monitoring & Restoration, Journal of Bioremediation and Biodegradation, and Journal of Geophysics and Remote Sensing and and former Executive Board Member for Atlantic Estuarine Research Society. She also serves in the Research Advisory Committee for NOAA-LMRCSC and Technical Advisory Committee for the Northeast Aquaculture Center, currently as co-chair. She has also been honored by an appointment from the Secretary of the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control as a member of the Delaware Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment Steering Committee for the State of Delaware.

She has also been actively involved in the promotion of international efforts to address water quality, aquaculture, and environmental issues through the Global Seminar and student and faculty exchange programs with Turkey, Puerto Rico, Guam, Saudi Arabia and Kenya, as an Embassy fellow in Marshall Islands in shellfish aquaculture and drinking water quality, as an invited lecturer in Belize in aquatic ecology and as a project co-director for the student international experience in Australia in climate change education.
