Biography

William Mitchell, MD, PhD is an internationally recognized expert in the pathogenesis of intracellular pathogens, which include the retroviruses (HIV, tumor viruses), Chlamydophila pneumoniae, and broad spectrum TLR3 antiviral/ immuno-modulator agonists. His original discoveries include isolation and characterization of Psedocollagenase from Clostridium histolyticum, antibody dependent enhancement of HIV infection, the two subunit structure of retroviral genomes, and the anti-HIV activity of a TLR3 agonist. He is also is heavily committed to translational medicine diagnostics using Next Generation Sequencing.

Dr. Mitchell earned the BA and MD degrees at Vanderbilt University and the PhD degree at Johns Hopkins University following residency training on Osler Medicine at Johns Hopkins and Pathology at Vanderbilt. He is currently Professor of Pathology, Microbology & Immunology at Vanderbilt University. He is certified by the American Board of Pathology in Clinical Pathology.

Dr. Mitchell has fifteen issued US patents. He serves as a member of the Board of Directors for Hemispherx Biopharma, Inc.(Philadelphia, PA) and Chronix Biopharma, Inc. (San Jose, CA). He has been listed for many years in Who’s Who in the World (Marquis) and also cited by the Guide to America’s Top Physicians (Consumers’ Research Council of America), 2000 Outstanding Intellectuals of the 21st Century (The International Biographical Centre), and Top Doc (Health Tap, Inc).

Non-scientific interests include music (symphonic, opera, and blue-grass), theatre, and alpine skiing.
