Biography

Dr. Bhakat is an Associate Professor in the Department of Genetics, Cell Biology and Anatomy at University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha. He received his Ph.D. in 1999 from University of Calcutta, India. After postdoctoral training on regulation of transcription of DNA damage repair gene,   he joined as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), Galveston, Texas in 2004. Dr. Bhakat made many seminal discoveries on the role of posttranslational modification of DNA damage repair proteins in cancer cell proliferation and its impact on DNA damage response and transcriptional regulation.  His current research is aimed to better understanding the mechanisms by which epigenetic modifications regulate transcription and induce tumor cells drug resistant.
