Biography

Dr. Clayton J. Clark II is Associate Faculty Director for the Florida A&M University Sustainability Institute (FAMU-SI) and an Associate Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. His research specialties include water quality, water resources, remediation of contaminated soil and water, environmental sustainability, hydrology, and hazardous waste management. Dr. Clark has served on various national committees including: the National Research Council Committee on the Selection and Use of Models in the Environmental Regulatory Decision Process; Committee on Environmental Improvement for the American Chemical Society (ACS); and Committee on Project Seed for ACS. Dr. Clark has been blessed to have the opportunity to edit two books, produce over twenty peerreviewed publications, serve as a reviewer for technical journals over twenty times, serve as a technical
panel reviewer for the National Science Foundation and the Environmental Protection Agency numerous times, and provided numerous presentations to both national and international audiences. Dr. Clark’s research interests include combining chemical and environmental engineering techniques for hazardous waste handling and disposal; research and treatment pertaining to petroleum based products; treatment of wastes removed from soil and aqueous systems; destruction or transformation of hazardous chlorinated wastes; dechlorination using iron and bimetallic substrates; sonochemical waste treatment; water quality research; surfactant/cosolvent in-situ flushing research; site remediation research; phase mobility of contaminants; in-situ vitrification; treatment of wastes due to coal mining; and overall environmental and water resources sustainability. In his position, Dr. Clark has begun formulating, coordinating all future growth and development of all technical aspects of sustainability at FAMU. This focus includes integrating all concepts of sustainability: environmental protection, economic sustainability, research, teaching/learning and service training; expanding multi-disciplinary collaboration in sustainability-related activities; leading the proposal submission, education and research initiatives originating from FAMU-SI and leveraging sustainability efforts to increase student recruitment, retention, and graduation rates. He has his Professional Engineering Licensure (P.E.) in Florida and has also served as faculty advisor for Engineers without Borders and the National Society for Black Engineers for the College of Engineering.
