Biography

Dr Wasiu Adekunle Olowu – Professor of Kidney Disease and Hypertension in Children– was born July 26, 1958 in Odomola, Epe Local Government of Lagos State. He trained as a medical doctor between 1980 and 1985 at the College of Medicine of the University of Lagos. After the mandatory one year of internship (1985-1986) and National Service (1986-1987), he was admitted into the Residency and Fellowship programmes of the National Postgraduate Medical College at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife, State of Osun on March 8, 1988. The Fellowship programme was completed in November 1993 and was appointed Hospital Consultant Paediatric Nephrologist May 18, 1994 in the same hospital. Dr Olowu began his lectureship career as Lecturer I on August 1, 1995 in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. He was promoted Reader and Professor respectively, on October 1, 2005 and 2009.

Dr Olowu pioneered the Paediatric Nephrology and Hypertension sub-specialty at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex. His research interests are in the areas of acute kidney injury and Burkitt’s lymphoma nephropathy.  He has more than forty publications in both national and international peer review journals. More than 70% of his publications are in the Paediatric Nephrology and Hypertension sub-specialty. He has published in some of the leading journals of nephrology in the world. He is currently a reviewer for some of these journals. He was an international member of the Abstract Review Sub-Committee of the World Congress of Nephrology, Vancouver, Canada 2011. Dr Olowu is on the Editorial Boards of the World Journal of Nephrology (Hong Kong) and Journal of Paediatric Nephrology and Urology (Turkey).

He has served both the Teaching Hospital and the University in different capacities. Recently, he successfully completed a one-year term as Acting Head of the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health (August 1, 2012 to July 31, 2013). At national level, he is an examiner at the National Postgraduate Medical College. As a visiting consultant, he successfully started a fully fledged Department of Paediatrics – in 1994 – at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo in Ondo State, Nigeria with a standard Intensive Care Newborn Unit, Consultant Paediatric Out-patient Clinic, and a Children Emergency Ward; all of these were nurtured to a standard that was considered good enough to be accredited for the training of pre-registration house officers by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria in 1996.

Dr Wasiu A. Olowu loves reading, playing Table Tennis, and listening to music. He is married to Architect (Mrs.) Falilat Y. Olowu. The marriage is blessed with four children.
