Biography

Santica M. Marcovina, Ph.D., Sc.D. is the Director of The Northwest Lipid Metabolism and Diabetes Research Laboratories (NWRL), University of Washington; Research Professor of Medicine, Division of Nutrition, Endocrinology, and Metabolism, Department of Medicine, University of Washington; Affiliate Faculty, UW Medicine Diabetes & Obesity Center of Excellence, University of Washington. Dr. Marcovina’s educational background includes a doctorate in Social Sciences and a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences with a major in Biochemistry. Her research interest has mainly been focused on the immunochemistry of proteins and apolipoproteins. She was a pioneer in the development of monoclonal antibodies and in their use to study the structure function relationship of a variety of proteins and apolipoproteins. At present, the major focus of Dr. Marcovina’s research is on the heterogeneity, structure-function relationship and clinical significance of Lp(a). Dr. Marcovina has acquired a great deal of experience in the complexity of multi-center clinical trials where she provides her expertise by serving as a member of Steering committees, Working Groups and Publications and Ancillary Study Committees. She is also part of several publication groups providing her expertise in the interpretation of the data. She is author or co-author of 460 accepted publications in peer-reviewed journals.
