Lonzetta L. Newman, MD,  FACP is an associate professor of medicine in the Department of Clinical Cancer Prevention, Division of Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

As a board certified internist, Dr. Newman performs hers clinical duties in both the Cancer Prevention center and the Undiagnosed Breast Clinic.  In each arena, she is committed to a multidisciplinary approach to assisting patients.

Dr. Newman serves as a voluntary faculty of The University of Texas School of Medicine at the Health Sciences Center.  She precepts our future physicians both through the medical school and via the statewide General Internal Medicine preceptorship program, sponsored by the Texas Medical Association.  Dr. Newman exemplifies excellence in the practice of medicine and was elected to fellowship into the American College of Physicians, the national organization of internists.

She is a member of a number of committees at the UTMDACC.  Some of which include, Medical Records, Point of Care, Credentialing Committee for Medical Staff, and the PRS retirement board. Dr. Newman is also an ambassador of the institution.  In this capacity, she actively communicates MD Anderson Cancer Center’s research/science/clinical endeavors to the community-at-large.

Her research interests include obesity and its relation to breast and prostate cancer.  What role does obesity have in the development of cancer? To answer this question, Dr. Newman began a pilot body mass index program within the Cancer Prevention Center in 2009.  It encompasses a nutrition consultation for targeted patients, provides them with information relating to the kinds of cancer that obesity predisposes them to, and how weight loss might aid in cancer risk reduction.  This confirmed the need for an integrative approach to weight loss for cancer risk reduction.  Funded by the Duncan Family, an integrative health team was formed in 2012 in the Cancer Prevention Center.
