Biography

Dr. M. Constantine Samaan is a Staff Physician in the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at McMaster University and McMaster Children's Hospital. Dr. Samaan completed his training in Pediatric Endocrinology at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto. He pursued Postdoctoral fellowship laboratory research training as an international research Scholar at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, USA and at the Program in Cell Biology at the University of Toronto. Dr. Samaan's clinical and  research focus is in the area of Pediatric Immunometabolism, with a specific focus on childhood obesity, diabetes and inflammation.

Using human clinical studies along with animal and cell culture models, The goal of this translational research program is to define novel biomarkers and predictors of obesity, and to design interventions to treat and ultimately prevent obesity. Our aim is to determine the molecular mechanisms involved in the interaction between cells of the immune system and metabolic organs, how this interaction triggers inflammation, and how inflammation then leads to obesity related complications including insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

This translational program aims to bring questions from the clinic to the bench, and to take the answers back to the bedside to benefit patients. The goal is to define interventions that will not only combat established obesity and its complications, but will ultimately result in its prevention.

Dr. Samaan's clinical work reflects this commitment, with clinical responsibilities in the Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes clinics. In addition, he provides care for children in the Endocrine clinic and Pediatric Obesity Program at McMaster Children's Hospital.
