Personal Statement
The research projects of Dr. He’s lab focus on the structure and function of HIV-1 envelope (Env) glycoprotein that mediates virus entry and induces neutralizing antibodies. Specifically, we study the mechanism of Env-mediated membrane fusion and design HIV-1 entry inhibitors. One of our recent findings is the M-T hook structure that plays critical roles for HIV-1 entry and inhibition. The second line of the projects focuses on the isolation and characterization of human neutralizing monoclonal antibodies against HIV-1, with a goal of better defining Env-based neutralizing epitopes that are important for vaccine immunogen design and immunotherapy.
