Biography

Charles L Bennett MD PhD MPP is the Frank P and Josie M Fletcher Professor and SmartState Center Director for Medication Safety and Efficacy at the South Carolina College of PHarmacy.  Dr. Bennett's background is from Swarthmore College (High Honors and Phi Beta Kappa graduate, 1977), University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (1981), internal medicine, hematology, and oncology training at the University of Chicago and Michael Reese Hospital (1987), and PhD and MPP with honors in social science methods from the RAND Graduate School (1989). The two year time-period for attaining a PhD was the fastest time for a PhD at RAND.  Dr. Bennett's initial peer-reviewed funding was from the National Center for Health Services Research (post-doc), the VA Health Services Research and Development (Career Development Award and Merit Review), and the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (R01). He has led numerous R01, R24, U01, ACS, FDA, and other funding agency grants. The SONAR project is co-led with John Bian, and is in the third year of a five year R01 grant period.  He has authored > 350 peer-reviewed publications, including articles that have appeared in the NEJM, JAMA, Lancet, Blood, Annals of Internal Medicine, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, and other major journals.
