Biography

Dr Larry Distiller received his MB BCh degree from the University of the Witwatersrand and qualified as a Physician, obtaining his FCP(SA)in 1972, subsequently subspecializing in Endocrinology and Diabetes. After a year in the USA where he worked as an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Endocrine Division, University of Colorado, Health Services Centre, Denver, Dr Distiller returned to South Africa in 1982 and entered private practice.

He is an elected a Fellow of American College of Endocrinology, a Fellow of Royal Society of Medicine and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. In 2010 Dr Distiller was appointed an Honorary Visiting Professor at the Centre for Endocrine & Diabetes Sciences, University of Cardiff Medical School, Wales.

 He is a member of numerous Societies and Organizations including the American Endocrine Society, the American Federation for Clinical Research, the Association of Clinical Endocrinologists of U.S.A., the American Diabetes Association and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes. He has also been an invited participant for number of international study groups and workshops related to Diabetes and is on the Central Operational Committee for several large international clinical trials.

He has authored over 80 scientific publications, has presented at a number of international Diabetes conferences and is on the Editorial Board of 4 publications. He is a member of the International Diabetes Federation Guideline committee.

Currently, Dr Distiller is still active in clinical practice but is also the Managing director and Principle Physician of the Centres for Diabetes, a network of over 250 Diabetes Centres of Excellence across South Africa.
