Biography

Dr. Stephen Eubank Harris have had a strong interest in gene regulation since 1965 as a graduate student, continuing at CalTech working on nucleic acid hybridization theory and practice and chromatin biology, and with Bert O’Malley working on estrogen regulation of the ovalbumin gene. From 1976 to 1983, he was director of Molecular Embryology Workgroup at NIEHS, working on androgen regulation, and cloning of androgen regulated genes. In 1983, he was appointed director of Recombinant DNA at the W. Alton Jones Cell Science Center in Lake Placid NY, continuing molecular characterization of the andogen receptor and androgen regulated growth factor genes. In 1990 a began an interests in bone and teeth molecular biology, with a focus on the Bmp2 and Bmp4 genes. This work continues today in the context of next generation sequencing tools and method to develop deeper mechanistic insights into Bmp2 action. Our paper in J. of Cell Science, Yang et al, 2013 and paper in International Journal of Oral Sciences, Rakian et al, 2013 describes many of the skills and techniques we have applied to current projects in evaluating the bone phenotypes of the conditional Bmp2 tooth, periodontium, and bone selective knock-out models. He have over 23 years experience in mouse genetic models and 50 years in molecular biology.
