Biography

Dr. Javad Hekmatpanah is currently a Professor of Neurosurgery and Neurology at The University of Chicago, Illinois, USA. He was neurosurgery resident (1961-1964) at the University of Chicago under Dr. Joseph P. Evans and Dr. Sean Mullan. He was an Assistant Professor (1964-1970), an Associate Professor (1970-1975), and Professor (1975-present) in the Division of Neurosurgery at the University of Chicago. He was awarded the McClintock Award for outstanding teaching in the Medical School at the University of Chicago in 1966. He is a member of numerous medical societies and is a past president of both the Central Neurosurgical Society (1974-1975) and the Chicago Neurological Society (1979-1980). He is certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery (1966) and by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (1967). His clinical interest has centered around management of brain tumors and diseases of the spine.

Dr. Javad Hekmatpanah’s laboratory research has focused on the pathophysiological alteration of the brain and its micro vessels in cerebral compression, cerebral contusion, cardiac arrest, and air embolism. He has produced over 1000 tumors in rats through intra-cerebral inoculation of Kirsten sarcoma virus which were used for various laboratory experiments. His recent work was the study of ingestion of alcohol by nursing rats and its effect on the cerebellum of the offspring. He has 44 publications.
