Biography

He is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Ohio State University Medical Center. He is an ABR Board Certified medical physicist who specializes in radiation biology, radiation protection, image-guided radiation therapy, Gamma Knife, Linac-based external beam radiation therapy, low and high dose rate brachytherapy (LDR & HDR). His recent research focuses on investigation of radio-resistance of cancers and the image-guided radiation therapy using methods of external beam, brachytherapy (HDR and LDR), and stereotacticradio-surgery (Gamma Knife or accelerator based). He has been closely collaborating with Dr. Hu, Dr. Bloomston, and Dr. Frankel to build the first endoscopic OCT imaging machine for detecting early stage pancreatic cancers (2010 Pelotonia Idea Grant). Now he propose to develop an innovative technique that uses the OCT image to guide brachytherapy on early stage pancreatic cancers. He had been well trained in theoretical nuclear and particle physics, experimental nuclear and particle physics, and medical physics with both research and clinic disciplines. He had extensive research experience and skills in building hardware for experiments, and writing computing software to perform numerical calculations, experimental data analysis, and reconstruct medical images. He has been working daily in clinic as a clinician on radiation therapeutic physics as well as a researcher to treat cancer patients. He had direct access to all the radiation therapy resources required for this project such as the HDR brachytherapy machine, the treatment planning system, and the OCT machine. After years of working on different fields with different collaborators, he had accumulated enough academic knowledge and management experience to ensure he lead this project to success. He will oversee all aspects of this project including designingthe work flow for the OCT- guided Brachytherapy system, writing computing software to establish the coordinate system, and designing the phantom and swine experiments.

Research Interest

Specific research interests are in (1) investigating the response of cancer cells to radiation, especially activation induced cytidine deaminase (AID) and its sensitivity to radiation therapy; (2) developing new techniques to improve the treatment efficacy of leukemia cancers, pancreatic cancers, and brain tumors.
