Biography

Gerardo Perozziello works as Adjunct Professor in the Department of Experimental and Clinical Medicine of the University “Magna Graecia” of Catanzaro and as microfluidics group team leader in the nanotechnology laboratory of the same Department. He teaches to undergraduate students in the course of Biomedical Engineering (biomaterials, nanotechnology, artificial organs).
His resesearch interests and activities range from micro and nanofabrication technologies and biomaterials to microfluidics and optical nanodevices applied to the field of medicine and biology. His background as Engineer and the several collaborations with several companies contributed to set his orientation versus the industrial research and, in particular, the development of automated innovative microfluidic devices for screening of biological samples. These involve multidisciplinary fields (Chemical Eng., Material Science,  Mechanical Eng., Biomedical Eng., Biotechnology,...).
Gerardo Perozziello authored and coauthored more than 70 scientific publication (international peer-reviewed papers and conference proceedings, H index taken from scopus equal to 14). He is co-author of 8 patents and 5 books.

He is involved in several research collaborations with different international Institutes such as the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the European Radiation Synchrotron Facility (ESRF), The Korean Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), Northwestern University (NU), King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).

Research Interest

Gerardo Perozziello carries out an interdisciplinary research activity between Engineering, physics, biology and nanomedicine that includes basic and applied research in biomaterials, microfluidics, and nanotechnology. At BioNEM lab, he is dedicated to manage the microfluidics group and conduct research. His main interests concern the study of cells at micro and nanoscale, their structure and function, through novel spectroscopy approaches mediated by microfluidic devices, scaffolds and nanostructures. In particular the activity includes: Development of nano plasmonic devices for label-free detection of cells and biomolecules; Development of microfluidic devices for handling and screening biological samples; Studies of interaction between cells and micro-/nano-structured materials and/or biomaterials and/or biomimetic environments.
