Biography

Maozhen Li is a Professor in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at Brunel University. His research interests are in the areas of high performance computing technologies including grid computing and cloud computing, smart grids, big data analytics, and intelligent systems. He has over 100 scientific publications in these areas. He has served over 30 IEEE conferences. He is an Associated Editor of the Journal of Cloud Computing Advances, Systems and Applications, Springer, International Journal of Grid and High Performance Computing, International Journal of Distributed Systems and Technologies, and the Journal of Computing and Informatics. He is a Fellow of the British Computer Society.

Prof. Li has successfully secured over £2M research funding from a number of funding sources including the EPSRC and the EU. He contributed to the EU funded HiPerDNO project on High Performance Computing Technologies for Smart Distribution Network Operation (http://www.hiperdno.eu/). He is the Co-Investigator of the UK EPSRC funded research project (EP/K006487/1) on "Developing Scalable Smart Grid Infrastructure to Enable Secure Transmission System Control", and leads the work on big data analytics for smart grids using cloud computing technologies.  This project is led by Brunel University in collaboration with the UK National Grid, Alstom and Intel, running from 1 March 2013 until 28 February 2016.

Prof. Li has been working closely with Intel UK on high performance computing technologies. Recently he has successfully secured 6 high performance Xeon servers from Intel featuring in total over 200 CPU cores, 2TB RAM and 5TB hard disk space. These resources are being used as part of a private cloud computing infrastructurehosted at Brunel University. The cloud platform is made accessible to industry partners such as UK National Grid and Open Grid Systems.

As the first supervisor, Prof. Li has successfully supervised 12 PhD students since he joined Brunel University in 2002. As an external examiner, he has examined over 20 PhD theses at a number of universities in the UK including University of Warwick, University of Bath, Cardiff University, University of Surrey, University of Kent, De Montfort University.
